KOSTAD I Questions about charging electric cars

There are two "types" of electricity used in electric cars: Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC). The electricity available from the utility grid is always alternating current. However, batteries, such as those in an electric vehicle, can only store direct current. For this reason, a "converter" is built into vehicles. A fast charging station already delivers "converted" direct current to the vehicle.

This depends on how big the battery is, how empty it is and at what maximum power it is charged. An example: The BMW i3 has a usable battery size of 37.9 kWh. If it were empty, a full charge with 2.3 kW would take more than 15 hours, with 11 kW about 3.5 hours and a quick charge with 50 kW about 40 minutes to 80 % charge level. However, the maximum charging power is limited by the maximum possible charging power of the electric car and that of the electrical installation.

Charging columns form the supply infrastructure for electromobility in public spaces, e.g. on roads or in Park & Ride areas. Charging columns can also be installed in company parking areas. Charging boxes, or wall boxes, are often installed in private car parks or on company premises, e.g. by fleet operators.

Any vehicle with a suitable charging plug can be charged at a charging pole. Depending on the signage, the parking space at the charging pole may only be used by vehicles with an E-licence plate.

On the vehicle side, plug types 1 and 2 are currently used. According to an agreement of the European car manufacturers, only plug type 2 will be used from 2017. On the charging station side, the following sockets are currently mainly used: Schuko, Type-2, CHAdeMO and CCS.

Inductive charging means: contactless charging. It allows e-cars to be charged by charging elements in the roadway, in car parks or garages. The energy is transmitted wirelessly by means of high-frequency alternating currents. However, this option is not yet ready for series production.

Water, humidity and weather do not affect the charging process, because the technical equipment is prepared for all eventualities, so that no specific temperature is necessary and water or humidity cannot penetrate anyway. Furthermore, the low-emission vehicle not only makes charging outdoors possible, but also in underground garages. This is especially popular with hotels, which allow access to the normal power grid via a shock-proof plug even if no charging station is available.

Charging e-cars offers safety in every respect. For charging at one's own location, the installation of a wallbox (technical security and communication-capable) is recommended. The charging process at public charging points cannot be interrupted by unauthorised persons. For this purpose, there is an electrical interlock. The cable can neither be removed from the e-car nor from the charging point by unauthorised persons.

Dangers for the user himself can also be ruled out during charging. The charging stations designed for this purpose are comprehensively protected, for example by fusing the plugs. Wetness or snow cannot cause an electric shock. The energy only flows when the e-car is connected to the charging pole.
